Hon Tony Smith MP served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, 2015-2016 and 2016 to 2021, resigning in November 2021.  Born in Melbourne, he studied Commerce and Arts (Hon) at The University of Melbourne.  He became media adviser and then a senior political adviser to Peter Costello, the then Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and Treasurer.  Mr Smith was first elected as the federal Membewr for Casey, Victoria, in 2001.  Mr Smith has served with distinction in many parliamentary positions.  As Speaker, he pledged to absent himself from the Liberal party room, to protect the neutrality of the chair, and he ahs been widely recognised as one of the great Speakers of the House of Representatives.  Mr Smith is not contesting the forthcoming election.
