Chatter from the Chair

Hi friends,

The Rotary theme for the month of May is Youth Service Month. It can take only one person, one interaction, one experience, to change the course of a young person’s life.

I was the young woman who ended up in a life she hadn’t planned and couldn’t see a way out of. Until the CEO of the organisation I worked for called me into her office and explained that she would be sending me on a Youth Leadership camp, sponsored by the local Rotary club. At the time I thought this was some sort of joke or punishment. But I reluctantly attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and came back a different person. Or rather, I came back as the person my boss already knew I had the potential to be. It only took one person to see something in me and to push me. It took one amazing Rotary youth program to open my eyes and my mind to all that was out there for me. And from there I started making the thousand tiny changes that would lead me to live a life that I love where I have been able to serve and help others to improve their own lives.

Rotary Opens Opportunities. I encourage you to check out the many youth programs that are on offer in our district, and keep your eye out for young people who could do with a gentle push toward the right opportunity.

Emma

Social Night - Burgers and Beers - 6 April

A great night of relaxation and chatter was held at our April social night at Canberra Brewing.  Brod's burgers were super!

Club Meeting 13 April - Welcome to Lynne and Chartering Discussion

A highlight of our club meeting on 13th April was to welcome Lynne Duckham into our fold.  Lynne brings many years of Rotary experience and knowledge from her past membership in RC Canberra South and Canberra Sunrise.  Welcome Lynne.

Led by Sam Doyle, we also had a good discussion on some of the aspects of operating the club once we have chartered - helping guide our small team involved in developing the Club constitution and by-laws.  This was an important member engagement activity and will allow us to progress development of the draft constitution and by-laws in the near future - a key step toward chartering.

27 April Meeting - Speaker Janelle Weissman. Executive Director UN Women Australia

We had a great turn up for our meeting, with 19 members, prospective members and friends attending.  Ian led the Rotary toast, saluting the Rotary Club of Bordertown and recognising their work supporting wildlife rescue and conservation.

The hilight of the evening was Janelle's presentation, which walked through her journey from being a Rotary Exchange student, to Rotary Peace Fellow to head of UN Women Australia, and finally presenting the ongoing challenge for gender equity, both in Australia and around the world.  This was starkly focussed on with a short video - "She'll Be Right".

It was also wonderful to have guests Cristina Holman (and baby Iris) and Marcus Clifford and his wife Christina join us, along with Jill Bailey from Sunrise.

As usual, a few club stalwarts stayed on after the meeting for a drink and to solve some of the world's challenges.  Good time:)

Paul Harris Fellow Presentation
Most of you will be aware that the club recently presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Steph McCorkelle for her work and generosity in donating commissions from our End Polio virtual Tupperware party last year that raised $1248.  We had to mail the actual certificate and pin down to her.  Below are photos of her with her PHF.  Thanks Steph.  More news on Steph later in the bulletin, with her running our next virtual tupperware fund raising function on 4 May.

Fund Raising - Chocolates

Thanks Mitra for initiating and organising our current fund raiser selling boxes of Cadbury chocolates.  Hopefully it did not mean too many extra kilos being added to member's weights through the enticement of supporting our club!!  This activity has yielded over over $500 into our Service coffers.  Anyone with money still outstanding please get it to Sam Saunders asap or discuss the situation with her.
Fund Raising - Bunnings BBQ ANZAC Day Afternoon

Our BBQ team of champions were at their best on ANZAC Day at Bunnings Fyshwick.  The team cooked up a storm and raised $376.  Thanks to Mitra and Ian for organising and purchasing the goods, and to Pip, Ser, Peter, Ian, Mitra, Simon and Masothy for their work on the day.  Great effort everyone!!

Thanks again to the wonderful generosity of Steph McCorkelle (PHF), we will be running another virtual Tupperware fund raising night on Tuesday 4 May, with proceeds supporting Dili recovery from the early April extreme flooding event.  Make sure you spread the word to family and friends.  There are plenty of bargains to be had in 'Tupperware Birthday Week'.

Our Meeting Routine

We meet on Tuesday evenings, typically from 6.30pm.

We alternate our meeting routine, with fortnightly club meetings at our home venue, the Canberra Club at 51 Blackall St, Barton.  Club meetings are normally held in the meeting room downstairs and start at 6.30pm.  At these meetings we like to discuss club activities, community service options what is happening in Rotary.  We also have guest speakers at some of these meetings.  If you would like to order a meal it is best to arrive about 15 minutes early to place your order and you are welcome to eat it during the meeting.  On these meeting nights a number of members like a social chat and drink after the meeting finishes (around 7.30pm).

Between our club meetings, we typically will have one social event a month and one or more community service activities.

Check our Facebook page for details of what is happening over the next few weeks.

Community Service Update and Opportunities
Street Library Launch at CS#1.

The culmination of our work in building street libraries  has been achieved with the launch of the first of two libraries on 6th April.

Community Services #1 and the Rotary Clubs of Canberra Sunrise and Canberra Sundowners partnered  to deliver a Street Library, which has been installed adjacent to Community Services #1 (CS#1) head office at 63 Boolimba Crescent Narrabundah.  Members of Canberra Sundowners Rotary Club fundraised, built, painted and installed the library with a Cat-In-the-Hat theme.

Immediate Past Chair and current Vice Chair Tara Pullen and CS#1 Executive Director of Community Support Services Leanne Barnes, spoke at the launch thanking Rotary members for our donation and hard work in delivering the street library and spoke of the importance of reading for all ages, especially for children.  This library will be predominantly filled with children's books, and is situated well for family traffic visiting the food pantry or other services at CS#1, or the adjacent playground.  The street library has been named "Play and read".

Special thanks goes to Tara Pullen for all her efforts in painting the library, all members who helped build the library and to Peter Hill for installing the library.
The second Street Library will be ready for installation in the not too distant future.

Recent feedback from CS#1 indicates that the library is getting good use:  "The street library is going wonderfully - I’ve refilled it twice since we put it in & I need to do it again this afternoon as it’s empty again! People just love it!"

Packing of 600 Birthing Kits

April is Maternal & Child Health month on the Rotary calendar and we wanted to do something to assist these critical areas of need.  So on 10th April, we assembled 36 members and friends to build 600 birthing kits 💪.  Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (https://www.bkfa.org.au/) will ship these units to where they are needed, making a tremendous impact on the ground for women in need of them.

The event also provided an opportunity for members of Canberra Sunrise and Canberra Sundowners, a number of friends of club members and our corporate sponsor (Keane Consulting) team to enjoy time together while supporting this great community event.

The running of birthing kit packing events helps to keep the cost of these kits down and therefore allowing more kits to be made available where they are desperately needed around the world - allowing women without ready access to a hospital to be able to give birth in a relatively clean environment with the necessary basic tools.  Each kit contains 6 disposable components:
- Soap to wash the birth attendant’s hands and the mother’s perineum.
- A plastic Sheet to prevent the mother and newborn coming into contact with the ground or an unhygienic surface.
- Gloves to cover the birth attendant’s hands and provide protection from infections such as HIV for carers and care recipients.
- Gauze to wipe clear the newborn baby’s eyes, and to clean the mother’s perineum prior to giving birth.
- Cord ties to cleanly tie the umbilical cord.
- A sterile blade to cut the umbilical cord and reduce risk of newborn tetanus and sepsis.

Thank you to Sam Saunders for driving this activity and to Patricia for arranging the use of Legacy House, which was a great venue.

For more information on the program, check out:  KIT International

Peace Fellows Dinner

Canberra Sunrise have hosted the 10 Rotary Peace Fellows studying at UQ (University of Queensland) to three days of visits to strategic and interesting venues around Canberra to support their studies.  The visit culminated in a dinner on 12th April, where each Peace Fellow spoke about their background and aspirations.  This years Peace fellows came from a diverse range of countries, including the UK, USA, Honduras, Mexico, Ethiopia, Singapore and Vietnam.  It was quite an inspiration to hear these ambassadors for peace speak and to hear of the value they place on this fully Rotary funded activity.

Club and District Development Seminar

This year's Club and District Development Seminar (aka the District Assembly) will be held on both the 15th May at Hennessy College at Young and the 22nd May at St Peters Anglican College at Broulee.   The same material will be covered at each session - so members should only book into one of the events.  Both sessions will be run as a one day event starting at 9am and finishing by 5pm.

While this is an event specifically intended to train Club's 2021-2022 Boards / executive teams, all  members are encouraged to attend with a view to developing as Rotarians.  There will be specific sessions for Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers as well as practical sessions on the the Direct ClubRunner database, web pages, club bulletins and the best ways to leverage social media.  You will be able to learn more about membership and club development, learning and development, public image, youth programs and the broad range of service project opportunities available to your Club.
